Pokemon Red and Blue Gym Battles

Pewter City Gym Leader: Brock

Brock specializes in the Rock type Pokemon and will utilize a level 12 Geodude and a level 14 Onix. Victory over Brock wins you a Boulder Badge, which increases attack and allows you to use HM05, Flash, outside of battle. He will also give you TM34, Bide.

Cerulean City Gym Leader: Misty

Misty specializes in the water type Pokemon and will utilize a level 18 Staryu and its evolved form, Starmie, at level 21. Victory over Misty wins you the Cascade Badge which allows Pokemon up to level 30 to obey you and allows you to use HM01, Cut, outside of battle. She will also give you TM11, Bubblebeam.

Vermilion City Gym Leader: Lt. Surge

 

Lt. Surge specializes in the electric type Pokemon. He fights with a level 21 Voltorb, a level 18 Pikachu and a level 24 Raichu. Defeating him will increase your Pokemon’s speed, earn you the Thunder Badge, and earn you TM24, Thunderbolt.

Celadon City Gym Leader: Erika

Erika is a Leaf Pokemon specialist in Celadon City. This all female gym will pit you against a level 29 Victreebel, a level 24 Tangela and a level 29 Vileplume. Defeating Erika will earn you the Rainbow Badge. She will also give you TM21, Mega Drain. The Rainbow Badge allows Pokemon up to level 50 to obey your battle commands and you can then use HM04, Strength, outside of battle.

Saffron City Gym Leader: Sabrina

If you managed to find your way through this gym and its teleportation pads, you are awarded with a battle against the psychic type gym leader,  Sabrina. Sabrina fights you with a level 38 Kadabra, a level 37 Mr. Mime, level 38 Venomoth, and a level 43 Alakazam. Psychic type Pokemon were weak against Ghost and Bug type Pokemon in Generation 1, but there were very few moves of those type pairings. Beating Sabrina earns you the Marsh Badge which allows Pokemon up to level 70 to obey. She will also give you TM46, Psywave.

Fuchsia City Gym Leader: Koga

Koga specializes in status changes and more specifically, poison. Designing his gym as a maze of invisible walls, his combat style is also meant to throw you off guard by putting you on the defensive with status ailments. He fights you with a level 37 Koffing, level 39 Muk, level 37 Koffing, and a level 43 Weezing. Defeating him will earn you the Soul Badge, allow you to surf outside of battle, increase your Pokemon’s defense, and TM06, Toxic.

Cinnabar Island Gym Leader: Blaine

Blaine is locked away on Cinnabar Island, protected by thieves and a lock system operated by Pokemon trivia questions. Specializing in fire type Pokemon, Blaine uses a level 42 Growlithe, level 40 Ponyta, level 42 Rapidash and a level 47 Arcanine. If you are to have any luck winning, I suggest a Psyduck.  Defeating Blaine will earn you the Volcano Badge which increases Pokemon’s special. He will also give you TM38, Fire Blast.

Viridian City Gym Leader: Giovanni

The Pokemon League apparently does not have strict standards on who can be gym leaders. Your final opponent is Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket. Giovanni utilizes ground type Pokemon and is located inside of the Viridian Gym that had been locked up the entire game. Your final gym challenger will use a level 45 Rhyhorn, a level 42 Dugtrio, a level 44 Nidoqueen, a level 45 Nidoking, and a level 50 Rhydon.  Defeating Giovanni earns you the Earth Badge will makes all Pokemon, regardless of level, obey you. He will also give you TM27, Fissure. Good luck at making it work though.
